I remember wanting to watch this when it came out in theaters.  So, when I saw it at Spectrum (yes, I still have a late fee at Blockbuster) I yoinked it up faster than a tribble can cause trouble.  I really was expecting a good movie, and I wasn't disappointed.  This movie was actually funny.  I mean, really funny.  I haven't seen a really funny movie in a long time.  Seems like everybody in the 90s had a message to get across or some stupid crap.

You know, this would make a great pic for an "Ate My Balls" website...

I'm sure you've seen previews for this movie.  It is about a bunch of has been actors who starred in a late 70s early 80s sci-fi show called Galaxy Quest (very similar to Star Trek).  All the actors do now is go to Galaxy-Cons (that's geek talk for Galaxy Quest Convention, similar to Star-Con, Poke-Con, or WOD-Con) and hope to get money from signing autographs and selling t-shirts.

Everybody is kind of pissed at the Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) because he takes all the spotlight, not realizing that he is a has been actor.  I mean, this guy really thinks that people respect him as an actor or something!  HA HA HA!!!  Anyway, Jason Nesmith is taking a leak after being rejected by the Gwen DeMarco who played the communications officer (Sigourney Weaver, who is damn sexy) and he overhears a bunch of people busting on him.  Really though, he shouldn't feel bad.  I mean, these convention people have to bust on somebody, you know?

What do you mean I have to fight an Alien?!?

Anyway, he gets really upset and yells at his fans and storms out of the convention.   Then, he goes home and gets mad drunk.  When he wakes up, he sees a bunch of losers from the convention standing outside his doors.  He gets dressed and goes to what he thinks is another convention or something, only to be beamed to another planet.  Then, he shoots "blue torpedoes" and "red torpedoes" at this big mantis guy (reminded me or the big grasshopper in A Bugs Life).  Thinking his job is complete (I mean, it was all just an act for the convention, right?) he tries to head home, but he can't find the exit from the stage.

Well, he does get home, and he recruits the rest of the crew from the old television show to go back to the ship with him.  They all think it's a job, but once they get there and get shot at, they think differently.  From there, things just get better.

Look at the poor sucker who found this website...  Let's EAT 'EM!!

The funniest aspect of this movie is the way that they talk about their old episodes in relation to what is going on.  Granted, this kind of stuff has been done before in movies about superhero actors and stuff, but his movie did it differently, even calling on assistance from "Questarians" (Trekkies) down on earth to help the actors with the technical stuff.  Even one of the guys that comes along is focking funny as hell.   He played an extra on one of the old episodes that got killed right away, and now he is always afraid he is going to die.  Ahh... that was sooo funny.

I really can't think of too much to say about this movie as far as bad elements go.   I mean, it was a bit predictable and the whole story was kind of tired (at least if you watch cartoons), but the way everything was put together was really good, well thought out.  If you're looking for something to tide you over until Battle Field:   Earth or Titan:  A.E., then this may not be the best choice.  If you're looking for something that pokes fun at old sci-fi shows and is really funny, than this is your choice.  Not a great science fiction movie in itself, it isn't a BAD one either.

***NOTE:  Don't take offence at me busting on star trek fans.  I myself am one.  I just think the whole damned thing is funny.  I think I'll go rent that movie Trekkies and do a review on that, even though it's more a documentary than a movie.  Besides, if we can't make fun of ourselves, then we are all doomed to be made fun of... or something.
